Today - November 30, 2009 - is Blue Beanie Day!  Wear a blue hat, cap or toque in support of web standards.

Why are web standards important?

  • Accessibility - Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate and interact with the Web.  Accessibility also benefits older demographics of web users with changing abilities due to aging.
  • Future Proofing - Web standards are intended to form a foundation for the world wide web so that web browsers and future software can understand the same vocabulary. Utilizing standards in your work prevents future rework required for newer and better technologies to come.
  • Search Engines - Keeping your programming code compliant to standards and properly documented allows search partners to quickly navigate through a website and to decipher which keywords are most important.

For more information about Web Standards you can visit the World Wide Web Consortium - W3C Website.

So wear a blue beanie today and show support for web standards!

Post pictures on Flickr and Facebook, tell others on Twitter using the hashtag #bbd09 and most importantly become informed - before you start you next web development project!

This post would be better if it had a picture of Victor wearing his blue beanie.
